Dear Student,
I am writing to update you on the situation with swine flu here at Imperial. Two students have recently fallen unwell with swine flu. Other cases are being investigated. As the virus becomes more widespread in the UK, more cases are expected amongst students and staff.
Symptoms of those students diagnosed with the virus have been mild and they have either recovered or are undergoing treatment. Close contacts have been identified and are being treated prophylactically to reduce the risk of them falling ill and of the infection spreading further.
Please note that the risk of you catching swine flu from any of the students who have been diagnosed with the virus will be extremely low. A person is only infectious for a few hours before symptoms develop and it usually requires close contact for more than one hour for the infection to be passed on. However, now that swine flu is becoming more common you should remain alert for symptoms of flu.
Specific advice
Specific action you should take to prepare for an outbreak of swine flu at Imperial is as follows:
1. Arrange with two of your friends to be flu buddies. A flu buddy is someone who will keep in touch and help you look after yourself if you developed flu. You’ll do the same for them. Make sure you have each other’s phone numbers.
2. If you have never
formally registered with a GP since moving into hall then get registered today. The Imperial College
Health Centre will be able to offer you advice on registering with a GP – you can contact them on 020 7584 6301.
3. Keep in regular touch with your parents to let them know how you are. We need to avoid the College being inundated with calls from anxious parents.

Les élèves touchés vont bien : ils sont soit guéri soit sous traitement. Et ceux qui ont été en contact avec eux sont identifiés et traités. -> Ouf tout va mieux!
Les chances que j'attrape la grippe porcine à cause de ces élèves sont faibles. -> Encore mieux. Une personne est seulement contagieuse quelques heures avant que les
symptomes se développent et il faut en général être en contact proche pendant plus d'une heure pour que l'infection se transmette. -> Bon à savoir!
Mais là où cela devient drôle, c'est dans les conseils particuliers. Afin d'être prêt à une épidémie de grippe porcine dans Imperial voilà ce que nous devons faire :
1. Se trouver deux "camarades de grippe" -> !!! Un camarade de grippe est quelqu'un qui reste en contact et qui t'aide à prendre soin de toi si
tu attrapes la grippe. Et je dois faire la même chose pour eux. S'assurer d'avoir leur numéros de téléphone. -> Ceci nous a bien fait rire!

2. S'inscrire auprès d'un docteur -> Je l'ai fait au début de l'année! C'est un peu la même idée que lorsque l'on doit choisir notre médecin
traitant en France.
3. Donner régulièrement des nouvelles à vos parents. Afin qu'ils sachent comment on va et que Imperial se fasse pas harceler par des parents inquiets. ->
Maman, Papa, pour l'instant, tout va bien!
Et après cela continue sur des rappels d'hygiène.
